Kids & Cords: A Deadly Combination

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says that cords from window coverings are one of the top 5 safety hazards in your home. There have been over 500 child strangulation from blinds and shade cords over the past few decades.

Over 5 million window coverings have been recalled in recent years because of injury and death to babies and young children. Recalled products include vertical and horizontal blinds, rollup blinds, Roman shades and roller shades. Strangulation and injury can occur anywhere in the house where children can wrap these cords around their necks or become entangled in the loops. This can happen quickly and silently.

To prevent child strangulation, the CPSC recommends the use of cordless window coverings in homes where children are present.

Safety Matters Checklist:

Reasons Hanging a Wreath on Your Window Shades is NOT a Good Idea

brown shuttersThe holidays are coming which means yummy food, family and friends, and of course, holiday decorating. When it’s time to dig that box of decorations out of the attic and create a winter wonderland in your home; think twice about what you hang on your window treatments. Some people make the mistake of thinking they can hang their decorations anywhere because they are temporary, but adding a heavy decoration, like a wreath, to your window treatments could cause long term trouble.

Reason to Not Hang a Wreath on Your Window Treatments

The science behind shades and shutters is relatively precise. Danmer’s custom shutters, for example, are made with high quality frames, stiles and the patented Duraglide Louver Tension System that support the louvers and are backed by a comprehensive warranty. However, while the shutters are designed to support their own weight, it is not made to support the weight of a holiday wreath or any other object. If you attach a wreath to one of the louvers or to a window shade, it will throw off the weight distribution. This can cause the frames, stiles or tension system to not function properly and it may even cause lasting damage. Danmer’s custom shutters and shades are specially designed to last for years to come under normal conditions, but hanging a wreath from them compromises this guarantee.

How to Properly Hang a Wreath

Just because you shouldn’t hang a wreath on your window treatments doesn’t mean your holiday decorations are ruined. There are lots of great ways to safely hang a wreath inside or outside your home.

Door Hanger: You can purchase (or make) a door hanger for your wreath. The door hanger fits over the top of the door and hangs down with a wreath hook. This is a simple way to add a wreath to any door.

Ribbons/Cloth: Another fun way to hang a wreath is from a ribbon or strip of cloth. Attach the material to the back of the wreath and then attach the top to a hook or nail. Tie a bow at the top to hide the nail. This method is especially festive when used for outside wreaths when you hang one in each window with a thick red ribbon. Depending on the type of windows you have, you may be able to run it over the top window sash into the house.
You can also find special hooks, magnet and attachments online to hang your holiday wreath depending on where you want to hang it and what type of material is there. You can’t go wrong as long as you steer clear of your window treatments.

Shutters can Qualify You for an Energy Credit!

You May Quality for a $500 Federal Tax CreditAre you hoping to get some perks from your new shutters? If you’re considering interior shutters. for your home, you may be wondering if this investment will qualify for an energy tax credit. It is important to know that not all shutters qualify – but some do. Make sure you check before you buy.

Federal Energy Tax Credit

Tax credits are often a great incentive for making upgrades to your home. In an effort to encourage homeowners to invest in energy efficient products, Congress enacted the Federal Consumer Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency. The Taxpayer Relief Act extended these tax credits into 2013 (and are also retroactive for 2012). Depending on the shutters you select, you may be eligible for a tax credit of 10% of the cost of the shutter system, up to a maximum credit of $500. Not only will you save money on heating and cooling costs for your home, you’ll get a little extra cash back at tax time too!

Danmer Custom Thermalite™ Shutters

Not all shutters meet the strict requirements for the federal energy tax credit, but Danmer is proud to offer the Thermalite™ Shutter Insulating System which does qualify under the guidelines set forth by the IRS and the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).

Thermalite™ synthetic shutters look and feel just like wood, but thanks to their innovative design and materials they are water resistant, fire retardant, and they insulate significantly better than wood. This shutter system will increase the energy efficiency in your home by reducing heat loss or gain through the windows. Thermalite™ shutters will keep your house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer thanks to the extra insulation.

Also, Thermalite™ shutters are made from polymer foam, which is a solid, non-toxic, synthetic material. Because Danmer uses this 100% synthetic, man-made recycled material, no natural resources are destroyed in the manufacturing process. These shutters are “green” as well as energy efficient.

You’ll also love the look and practicality of this shutter system. It looks and feels like wood, has a painted finish so it won’t yellow like the other synthetics on the market, and is guaranteed not to crack, warp, peel or yellow. There’s also warranty on workmanship, labor, and parts.

You’ll feel good about investing in Thermalite™ shutters. Not only will you save money on heating and cooling costs, you’ll also enjoy a smaller carbon footprint and a bigger tax return.
